When should I start preparing for move-out?

We recommend starting to prepare for your move-out at least a few weeks before your departure date. Giving yourself plenty of time makes it easier to organise your belongings, clean your accommodation and deal with any arrangements you need to make before leaving The Store House.

Why should I start early?

Move-out can involve more than simply packing your bags. You may also need to:

  • Pack and organise your belongings.
  • Arrange storage for items you aren't taking home.
  • Arrange shipping or collection for larger or heavier belongings.
  • Make travel arrangements, particularly if you're travelling home internationally.
  • Arrange the disposal or collection of any unwanted furniture or bulky items.
  • Clean your bedroom, bathroom and kitchen areas.
  • Return your key card.
  • Update your address and arrange mail redirection if needed.

Starting early gives you time to deal with these things without having to rush.

What if I'm travelling home?

If you're travelling home after your tenancy ends, it's particularly important to plan ahead. Think about what you're taking with you, what needs to be stored or shipped, and how you'll dispose of anything you no longer need.

If you're an international student, allow extra time for arranging luggage, shipping and travel.

What happens if I leave everything until the last minute?

Leaving your preparations until the day you move out can make the process much more stressful. You may also find that there isn't enough time to arrange storage, collections or other services.

Helpful tip

Start working through your move-out checklist a few weeks before you leave. A little planning goes a long way and will help you enjoy a much smoother move-out.
